Fund Raising Events Report from 2009.
20th Anniversary Ball – 17th July 2009. 125 people attended this spectacular event in a beautifully decorated venue – The Talbooth, Stratford St. Mary, with dancing to Solid Gold. What a memorable occasion to begin the celebration of our 20th year at The Shelley Centre. Our loyal supporters provided magnificent auction and raffle prizes, which were generously bid for, raising a grand total of £13,708. Huge thanks go Jan Derbyshire and the Team who organised such a wonderful event and of course to all who attended and bid!
Long Distance Sponsored Ride – 13th September 2009. This was again a lovely event for those taking part in the ride, and we were blessed with fine weather. Although numbers were down on previous years, we raised £1,421, with a prize going to the rider who raised the highest amount of sponsorship (£600). All participants enjoyed their day. The 2010 ride will be on 19th September (see Calendar of events for details).
Recital and Supper – 25th September 2009. This was a tremendously popular and enjoyable evening with a superb singer in Julie Roberts, who received a standing ovation for her performance. Added to that the food was delicious and plentiful. £1,607 was raised and our thanks go to Jennie Jenkins, and Olga and her team, for a splendid evening.
Fashion Show - 22nd October 2009. This was a very well supported and much enjoyed event. The models and clothes were most appealing and our thanks go to Vicki Wheeler of Ambiance for a splendid evening, which has raised £947 so far.
Mike’s Singalong at the Beehive Pub, Little Horkesley on 6th December 2009. Everyone enjoyed singing songs and carols at this annual event. £133 was raised with many thanks to Mike Last. This event will be held again on 5th December 2010. Do go along and enjoy the singing and a pint.
Shelley Carol Service 2009. The candlelit drive and coloured lights on the Christmas Tree and the buildings, welcomed around 130 warmly wrapped friends to share a glass of mulled wine and mince pies, before the Carol Service began. The ponies, sporting their tinsel covered headcollars, looked out from their warm stables as the rain began to fall! We all sheltered whilst The Very Reverend Martin Thrower, Dean of Hadleigh, began the Service with the singing of Away in a Manger. Prayers were read by two riders and nine others held candles, lit to represent each of the ponies. The rain then stopped while, led by the Shetlands, with their sleigh bells jingling, we walked in procession by torch and lantern light, along the candlelit road from the stables to Shelley Church, in our symbolic journey to Bethlehem. The Church, beautifully decorated, was warm and welcoming, and soon full to capacity. The candles representing the ponies were relit and placed on the Altar. Our singing of the familiar Carols was ably led by the Stour Choral Society and Annette Bray playing the organ. As the Christmas Story unfolded in Bible readings read by a rider, a parent and a helper, Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the Shepherds and Three Wise Men, formed a tableau in front of the congregation. The Revd Thrower reminded us of the Good News that the Christmas message brings to us, and we went home with ‘O come all ye faithful’ ringing in our ears. We always enjoy this end to our Autumn Term as we look towards Christmas. It may be the first of many Carol Services in December for some, but a lot of those who attend regularly say that they really look forward to this special occasion. We are grateful to all those who take part and help with the organisation. In 11 years we have always had a ‘live’ baby Jesus, so someone has eleven months to prepare for next year!
