EBONY’S BLOG - June 2011
Living with the Herd and People at
The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding (RDA)

Well, it’s anything but quiet here at present with May having been a very busy month, not to mention what’s coming up for June. In the first instance the re-surfacing of the stable yard and entrance has been completed and it’s looking very smart too: there has been an upgrade to the arena surface, in effect finishing off what was started last year, and that’s on the maintenance side only. Oh! And the Ragwort is now showing itself which will keep the field lads busy from now on……Any volunteers to help on this one?…A chance to enjoy the fresh air and views across the beautiful Brett Valley? The Fund Raising team are busy too.  On May 1st The Centre held a very successful 10 mile sponsored Countryside walk, and then on 21st we hosted a Stand at the Hadleigh Show, displaying a range of items for sale; both events for the purpose of boosting funds. A number of Volunteers attended the East Region Training Day, one of the subjects being Autism, and before that, on 8th May, 7 Riders, 4 horses, together with their supporting Helpers, carers and parents travelled to Oaklands College, St. Albans, for the Regional Qualifying Dressage & Countryside Challenge Competition. In spite of nerves being on edge our Riders enjoyed a very successful day with three qualifying for the National Championships at Hartpury in July: well done everyone! And a confession; I’m in hot water with Rocky because I laughed at him as he passed by the other day with his mane in plaits……not sure if he will forgive me yet? As far as June goes, we have the Stratford Hills Horse Trials over two days, 18/19th which is also in aid of The Shelley Centre and other charities, where some of our Helpers will be busy officiating in some capacity and the week following, Sunday 26th June, will be the Shelley Show which Riders and Helpers have been busy practicing and preparing for, for some time now.

As mentioned last month we have increased our Helper numbers which has enable us to add another ride: the new intake of Riders started after the Easter holidays so the pace of life is keeping high for our Helpers and the Herd, and me. As you can see they have enjoyed their new challenge and are looking forward to continuing their new adventure…… I think it’s all too much, I must go for a lay down……except I’ve just remembered, I can’t, because my feet are bolted to the floor: such are the problems for a mechanical horse!
