I’m pleased to give you an update on Charlie, our newest arrival, in that he has already become involved with our Riders and the other day I saw him heading down the driveway, followed by Rocky and Jet, at the beginning of a cross country ride: it was such a nice warm day for it too. Two of the field maintenance boys have just passed my room and I overheard them say that the first of the swallows had arrived overhead, so I shall keep an eye open for them in the stables which is their favourite nesting spot. All the signs are that spring has arrived, to be followed by summer......great, I can’t wait! People at The Centre are busy now planning the events for the months ahead. However, although it’s been quiet on the Rider front, in terms of ongoing major maintenance it has already been busy. After the worst of the winter weather had passed it was necessary to replace some of the underground drainage resulting in a new soak-a-way being built in the paddock across from my room and soon we will be resurfacing the entrance and stable yard. I mention these events just to illustrate what overall has to be done to keep The Centre going and where our funds have to be spent, although of course these are one off special costs but, never the less, necessary. On a routine basis fences have had to be repaired and the paddock surfaces, damaged by a combination of the wet and horse’s hooves, have been rolled and harrowed to encourage the growth of new grass. Thinking of the paddocks, don’t forget you keen gardeners that we have a stock of well rotted horse manure if you wish to come and collect. I know it’s a bit late to mention it but, you can always get some now and add to your compost heap for next year? Further to the subject of open spaces; just to remind you that we will have our usual Stand at the Hadleigh Show, Holbecks Park, on Saturday 21st May. It will be located within the shopping village part of the show, so do please come and see us. We will be selling a range of items including plants, cakes, gifts and RDA items.
We are fortunate that as a result of regular publicity and a recent appeal in our local Community News Magazines we continue to increase our Volunteer numbers which has allowed us to make inroads into the waiting list of Riders who are seeking to come to The Centre: Helpers are always welcome and we can never have too many in that to help a majority of our Riders it is necessary to have three Helpers to each horse; one to lead and two side walkers so if you have a couple of hours to spare please do consider coming to joint us. Ah, the door is just opening and it looks as if a new Rider is coming in for an assessment so must go……catch up with you next month.
Further editions of my blog will be uploaded shortly - make sure you come back soon! Meanwhile, if you want to catch up, ‘back-issues’ can be viewed by clicking HERE.
